Kathryn is a keen amateur gardener and a member of her local Penicuik Horticultural Society. She was elected to the committee as minutes secretary in 2012 and became president the following year, a post which she has held ever since. She joined the council of the Scottish Gardeners’ Forum in 2016, initially updating and organising the Judges and Speakers Registers. She became vice chair in 2017 and in 2019, when the president became ill, took over as interim chair and has since agreed to continue as chair for a further year.
Penicuik Horticultural Society is one of the oldest in Scotland, founded in 1842. It has flourished in recent years, running local flower shows in both spring and autumn, and successfully participating in Gardening Scotland. However, like many local horticultural societies, membership has dwindled, participation has become more challenging and no show was held in 2018. In taking on the role of chair, Kathryn has shown impressive leadership skills and was able to gather enough support to run a flower show in September 2019. The show will go ahead again in 2020.
Kathryn has proved herself to be a positive, constructive and enthusiastic member of both Penicuik Horticultural Society and the Scottish Gardeners’ Forum.
