Scott Green is the Development Worker for ‘Help Yourself Grow’, a gardening programme delivered by social care provider Fair Deal, at The Jeely Piece garden in Castlemilk, Glasgow. ‘Help Yourself Grow’ is designed to enable young people with an additional support need, to improve their gardening skills, life skills and employability skills. The learning programme that trainees work towards is The Caley’s Grow & Learn award.

In 2013, Scott Green was a participant in the Grow & Learn Award. Having no prior experience of gardening, he soon developed an interest in growing vegetables, propagating plants, lawn maintenance and garden design. On completion of his award, Scott developed his role with Fair Deal, Glasgow, and became a development worker with ‘Help Yourself Grow’. Scott worked alongside the trainers each week and has helped over 150 people with an additional support need to gain their Grow & Learn award.

Scott has made a significant contribution to the success of ‘Help Yourself Grow’ by his positive ‘can do’ attitude, encouraging others to take part and leading by example. He is a natural facilitator and is now leading many garden sessions on his own as a co-trainer. He has recently developed a volunteering opportunity for many trainees who have completed their award, to return to the garden as a volunteer, working alongside Scott on maintenance tasks.

Scott always goes the extra mile to help other people with an additional support need to garden. He shows great empathy for the people he works with and has a natural talent to understand why people may need a little extra help. His approach is always inclusive, kind and supportive.
He shows great determination and is eager to keep improving his gardening and training skills, for the benefit of him and also the many trainees that he continues to support.
