Alan Mackenzie is the Chair of the Scottish Orchid Society. He has navigated the Society through turbulent times for over ten years. His embracement of new approaches has meant that Scotland is one of the few UK orchid societies with increased membership in recent times.
Alan actively collaborates with the Glasgow Botanic Gardens and has organised the popular annual Glasgow Botanic Gardens Orchid Fair for many years. His dedication sees him travelling throughout the year to orchid shows all over the UK, to judge orchids and set up society displays, maintaining good relationships with the wider orchid community. He has recently become acting secretary for the British Orchid Council, promoting and participating in inter-society communication and collaboration, to the benefit of all.
Alan has started a new ‘grassroots’ conservation initiative (The Orchid Seedling Project) which he hopes will be a model for other orchid societies. Alan is a passionate, dedicated, hard-working ambassador for orchid-growing in Scotland.
