Simon is a natural communicator and incredibly generous with his knowledge. This award recognises exceptional advice and support given by Simon often in very challenging situations. Simon’s hands on approach to learning, giving guidance and advice, and being available to give support, has been highly valued by gardeners he works with and advises. Overseeing documentation frameworks, helping gardeners to develop their skills in project management and providing advice on the practicalities of the work. His support, training and advice has been instrumental in the career development of others.
Before becoming Regional Gardens and Designed Landscapes Manager for the National Trust for Scotland for gardens in the west of Scotland, Simon was at Edinburgh Zoo for the first fifteen years after his studies at Oatridge and Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. He still runs a zoo horticultural consultancy. But despite a busy career Simon continues to support his local community, is horticultural advisor to Kinghorn Community Land Association, runs a community gardening club and has designed Fife’s first Eco-cemetery.
