George shows you how easy it is to have daffodils blooms ready for a show?

There are a number of daffodils flowering in gardens across Edinburgh (and many other part of Scotland) at the moment.  Whilst the Caley Spring Show is still some distance away there should be plenty for the show bench.  We try to avoid too many clashes with other shows, in particular the shows that form part of the Jim Davidson Trophy (Aberdeen, The Caley, Dundee, Keith and Banff) so the Caley show is later this year  and we are hoping everybody will have some blooms to put on the benches.

So how easy is it to have blooms ready for the show?

I picked some daffodil buds from the allotment last week and photographed them on each of the next four days. It will show you just how quickly they can come out from what look like tight and uninteresting buds.

What is also interesting is that the petals are showing no nicks or flaws because they have had time to open slowly.

Go out and pick some buds from the garden and bring them into the house, trim the ends of the stems each day and change the water in the vase each morning.  Once the flowers are open we can start to prepare them for the Show Bench.
