Thomas Jefferson’s Garden: Dr Alley Marie Jordan
Dr Alley Marie Jordan is originally from the United States, where she grew up amongst the vineyards and orchards of Northern California. She lives in Edinburgh and has a PhD in Classics University of Edinburgh. Her first book, Classical Taste in the Architectural World of Thomas Jefferson (2025) is published by Bloomsbury. She is currently working on a second book on Marie Antoinette’s influence on the gardens at Versailles.
This talk will delve into the world of plants at Thomas Jefferson’s villa, Monticello in Charlottesville, Virginia: including the ornamental garden, kitchen garden and the woodland. We will also explore Jefferson’s interests in plants, scientific and culinary, including his obsession with runner beans.
