Last week’s last minute preparations

 In Allotment, Biochar trial

The allotment team had a busy couple of weeks trying to weed all the areas of the allotment ready for the Open Day on Sunday 25 August and keeping on top of the picking of the produce.

August on the allotment
The Japanese vegetables are growing well and our visiting party on Wednesday 21st enjoyed sampling some of the Japanese recipes that use them.

Biochar trial
The potatoes – variety Sarpo Mira – were dug up. 6 tubers were planted in the Biochar bed and the control bed and the results were interesting in that there was no significant difference in the weight from each. Those in the Biochar bed weighed 10.77kg and the control bed 10.42kg, so quite unlike the results from the cabbages. The onions remain, with those in the Biochar bed still growing and looking bigger than those in the control bed where the onions have died down and are definitely smaller.Lifting the Sarpo Mira 2013

The open day came and the weather was warm and sunny.  The Biochar trial and the Japanese veg aroused a lot of interest. However, the highlight of the afternoon was inevitably George’s master class on pruning and budding.
