Sandy started his career in horticulture in the north-east of Scotland. After moving to the Central Belt he worked in public parks in Grangemouth for years, many of them as a manager for Falkirk Council.
Horticulture is also his hobby and he has a particular interest in ‘showing’ which he sees as the test of a gardener’s skill. As chairman of Grangemouth Horticultural Society, he has been instrumental in making Grangemouth the venue for a series of flower shows that cover the traditional season from June/July to November. The first is July show, timed to be a rose, sweet pea and carnation show. The second is the main show in late September with strong sections for dahlias and early chrysanthemums. Finally, the November show is timed to cover later chrysanthemums.
