Helen runs The Danderhall District Guerrilla Gardeners, a group of volunteers made up of local adults and school children. The group maintains and develops seven community green spaces across Danderhall Village, including two important memorial gardens.
After Helen formed a link with Danderhall Primary School the group very quickly boosted the value of their gardening by involving pupils. Each week The Guerrilla Gardeners take groups of pupils to do local litter picks, learn about the coal mining history of the village and get gardening.
Thanks to Helen’s leadership the Guerrilla Gardeners have a set themselves an aim of “Inspiring the next generation to garden for nature, look after their community and its wildlife.” None of this would have been possible without Helen’s leadership, dedication and care for her home, her community and the wildlife around her
