A new year at the Allotment

 In Allotment, Blog, Veg Growing

We had showery day for our first stint of the new year on the allotment. We concentrated on doing a tidy-up and cleared away all the yellowing leaves from the brassicas and dug up the mashua. We had a reasonable crop, but a number of the tubers had been frosted in the very cold spell that we had in November even though they were protected by the dead vegetation of the plant.

Time now to cook and eat them and see what we think! We certainly have enough to do that and for a replanting for the next crop.

Digging up the mashua crop

The straw bundle had become rather wet so the dry straw was bagged up and put in the shed and the wet straw shared around the compost heaps.

The beds sown with green manure were showing a fine growth of weeds so there is still a good covering of the soil but the netting was no longer needed. It was chancy doing a late sowing but we live in hope.

Jobs for next week
