Allotment Tales – 15th August 2024
Thursday started off better than forecast but by 1pm miserable squally showers started sweeping across Bridgend – giving us just enough time for a swift picking of blueberries and sweetpeas before an earlier than usual retreat.
We managed some fruitful labour up to that point – carrot and beetroot seedlings were planted, weeding of paths continued and edges sharpened up – to be continued next week.
An expert lawnmower tutorial took place and all grassed areas cut. Harvesting continues. This week’s produce included peas, carrots, mangetout and courgettes along with a substantial picking of lovely fat blueberries, benefiting from several days of actual sun earlier in the week! The sweetpeas continue to thrive and the bean seedlings remain slug-free. We spotted a jewel-like Uchiki Kuri pumpkin and took its photo – in case the slugs get it once we left.
We have a new allotment member – a young Robin who seemed intent on keeping us company, dodging around for worms and supervising the filling of the compost bins.
Jobs for next week
- finish sharpening the path edges;
- continue weeding and harvesting;
- cut the grass if necessary;
- spruce the plot up in preparation for the Open Day on the 25th.
