Harvesting continues on the Allotment
Thursday was a bit breezy with – dare we say it – an autumnal edge. Have we officially been cheated out of summer, or do we optimistically hold on for a late one??
The apples don’t seem to mind – more thinning of smaller fruit today, resulting in a couple of trugfuls of giveaways. Some of us have patiently peeled these at home and been rewarded with a pan of frothy, naturally sweet sauce, perfect to dump on a bowl of breakfast yoghurt. The variety ‘James Grieve’ has been particularly good for this. We also picked a bucket load of Bramleys, ready for Open Day donations on the 25th.
We’re still harvesting blueberries, with the brambles set to take over soon. The courgettes continue to fruit well. We’ve left some to fatten up to marrow size – with one eye on the Grow and Show Together Autumn Show on 31st August & 1st September at Saughton Park in Edinburgh. This show is a joint event by The Caley and FEDAGA. Opening times: 31st August 1pm-4pm; 1st September 10am-3.30pm.
More weeding and edging was done in preparation for the Open Day, though our allotment is not manicured to the extent that some intimidating budding allotmenteers keep theirs (Well, that’s our excuse, if you came along on Sunday and found yourself raising an eyebrow). Weeds and slugs have made hay this year, with no need for sunshine!
P.S. The dwarf beans continue to evade the slugs…
Jobs for next week
- We’ll see what needs done following the Open Day!
