Last 2024 tale from the allotment
A mild December morning – perfect for final tasks before wrapping up for the Festive season.
We replanted and netted garlic dug up by some pesky creature and harvested the last of the carrots – stubby and a bit contorted, but a flavourful addition to winter soups and stews nonetheless.
Maintenance took up the rest of our time today. Replacing timber around the beds continued, fruit bushes were netted and potash from bonfires scattered around the base of these. We cut and wove willow into the windbreak, after hammering in a wire framework.
Work started on coppicing the hazels along the perimeter of our plot. The branches will be stored away for pea and bean frames and netting poles next year.
No jobs for next week – apart from harvesting sprouts for the Festive season, before our end-of-season lunch in the Community Café. We’ll meet up again around mid-January to plan for 2025.
Wishing everyone a very Happy Christmas and a fruitful New Year
