Spring Show new grower update – (but known to Beechgrove watchers!)

In Beechgrove Gardens, Blog, Bulb growing, Spring Show

Last October Calum (yes the Calum on Beechgrove) joined the Caley workshop determined to grow daffodils for the Caley Spring Show, after watching George (Mr Anderson) on Beechgrove in 2012!  As  Calum is now a Beechgrove regular  (https://www.beechgrove.co.uk/Calum-Clunie) he decided it was time!  So having planted bulbs with The Caley in the autumn he popped along to Saughton Park yesterday to learn what to do when staging cut blooms at the show.

Note: We use shop bought daffodils to practice with!

Calum says

“I am a complete newbie to growing and showing spring bulbs, it’s been fun so far and hope it will be the same come show day in under a months time.

After plunging at the Allotment I brought the pots home and have four areas set up around the garden where the pots sit. Some in the greenhouse, outside, getting either full sun, shade or half sun half shade. To make sure I get some entries into The Caley Show.

George has been very encouraging and supportive always a message away. (NB: I hope we’ll still be friends after the judging takes place.)

Learned a lot of tips today from Pam at the staging workshop and started the competitive banter with Robert.

Looking forward to seeing all the entries and people at my first Spring Show.

Good Luck all. See you at the Show 👍.”

Chatting with Calum yesterday her said he liked that in the Caley Show you could enter even if you just had a single bloom worth entering!

The Caley welcomes everyone.  We have classes for everyone and are always ready to help newbies and those wishing to get a bit better!  We are solooking forward to holding a real Spring Bulb Show again.

I wonder if George is feeling any pressure from Calum?
