Only a week to go….

In Blog, Bulb growing, George Anderson, Spring Show

Well, after all the struggles through the season so far we have arrived at the week of the show. Daffodils are in bloom in streets, country lanes and urban gardens everywhere. It has been a peculiar season once again.

However we may have something to put on the show-bench if the strong winds and bright sunshine are kind to us.

Unfortunately the pot of ‘Jan Bos’ hyacinths have gone past their best. The flowers have started to fade and have lost their vibrancy.
The ‘Pink Prince’ tulips are just starting to show colour and are still quite tight in bud and my task now is to try and prevent the flowers from opening. They will be put in the shade for the next week.

The pots of Scamp Challenge have done well and there are a number of reasonable flowers to select a perfect bloom from to impress the judge.

The pots of ‘Sabatini’ and ‘Kiwi Sunset’ both are well flowered. The pot of ‘Sabatini’ may find its way to the pot section while there are some flowers on ‘Kiwi Sunset’ that should feature in the cut flower section.

The pot of ‘Dolcoath’ is very well flowered as is its neighbour the pot of ‘Tru’ and both may appear in the pot section. If they pass muster I will make sure they are properly staked and the pots are washed and cleaned.

If you are putting flowers into the cut flower section make sure they are in perfect, or as near perfect as you can make them, try to get the petals on the perianth at the back of the trumpet sitting at 12 o’clock and arrange it in the vase so that it is ‘looking’ straight at the judge. If you are unsure ask one of the other exhibitors to help you. We are a friendly bunch and enjoy seeing others taking part.

I am off to move pots around to keep them out of the wind and sun.  Only one week now and then it will be time to select next years crop of winners.
Good luck.

Happy pottering
George
