Only four weeks to go
With only 4 weeks to go until the Caley Spring Show the pulse is quickening and anxiety levels increasing. Some pots are well advanced and others less so. What to do?? Back in the autumn I bought some bulbs of an American Division 2 variety ‘ Sacajawea’ it is in full bloom at the moment and may be well past its best come the date of the Show.
The pots of the Caley tulips, ‘Exotic Emperor’ and ‘Sweet Lady’ have been sitting outside in the cool for the past week and will remain outside until at least two weeks before the show just to hold them back.
The pots of Scamp Challenge have just started to push up their flower buds so they will remain in the shelter of the cold glasshouse where they can enjoy the extra heat of the spring sunshine.
‘The pots of ‘Dunston’s Fire’ and ‘Eva Hibbert’ continue to develop at different rates and so one will be put outside in the cool while the other remains in the glasshouse. The ‘Dunston’s Fire’. pot will be put out into the cool to slow it down a little.
Meanwhile the pots of ‘Golden Amber’ and ‘Blushing Maiden’ which have been outside all week will remain out in the cool as there buds are well developed.
The hyacinths ‘Kronos ‘ and ‘Woodstock’ continue to make me anxious with ‘Woodstock’ developing slowly but well enough while ‘Kronos’ has problems. Last week I removed some of the damaged flower pips from one of the spikes in the pot of ‘ Kronos’. It has recovered well enough but will it be good enough for the Showbench?
I will keep my fingers crossed and continue with the watering and feeding of all the pots.
Some snow has been threatened for next week so keep an eye on the news from the ‘cheery weather forecasters’ .
Happy gardening
George
Pam’s Footnote: Narcissus Sacajawea is an Early to Mid Season daffodil so looks to be flowering right on schedule. As George says timing is always a challenge.
