It’s busy on the Allotment

 In Allotment, Blog, Veg Growing

May and June are the busiest months on the allotment, with seed sowing and planting out in full swing. Not just for the summer crops but we are preparing for the winter plantings too.

Carrots (variety ‘Nantes 5’), beetroot (variety ‘Boltardy’), purple topped turnips and parsnips were sown and the grass edges were trimmed back.

As the days warm up and lengthen there is a big difference to be seen each week in how the plants are doing. The early potatoes are now almost all through although we shall still keep earthing up to protect from any late frost. From nothing last week, the mashua and a new-to-us veg, climbing spinach, are through and needing canes to clamber up and netting.

The entertainment of the day was the thieving magpie dining on a packet of sandwiches. We then needed a visit to the cafe to buy scones!
