Planting time on the Caley Allotment

 In Allotment, Blog, Veg Growing

Thursday was a lovely day for the first of the plantings for this year. And the sunny days have brought on all the spring flowers on the plot.

Early tulips

The onions went in (Rumba and Red Baron) along with the shallots (Red Sun) and we netted them to stop the birds pulling them out of the ground and the rabbits from eating the new shoots. The compost heap was checked over and transferred to one of the plastic bins to help speed up the decomposition. There is a spare plastic water butt so it was sawn in two and we shall fill the halves with sieved soil and some sand and use these to grow carrots, and hope that we have better success this year than last.

Hard at work

The strawberries were covered with fleece to give them some protection and hopefully promote earlier fruiting.

The rhubarb is coming along

There are still pickings of kale, sprouting broccoli & chard and the last of the leeks were dug up.

Jobs for next week

  • Plant out the early potatoes
  • Fill the half tubs with sieved soil and sand and sow carrots
  • Stake the summer raspberries
  • Repairs to the windbreak
