Allotment Open Day – 20th August
Another stint with the emphasis on weeding, and on the plus side with all the rain, the allotment is looking lush and we are looking forward to a good potato crop.
The new shoots on the soft fruit were tied up. The shoots are trained to one side one year and then for the next year are trained on the other side to keep the fruiting and new shoots separate. The sweet peas have give us a great display and are needing some sunshine but we keep deadheading them to keep them flowering as long as possible.
The broad beans are almost over now and as the stems are cleared, they are cut down to ground level leaving the roots in the soil. The roots have nitrogen nodules on them and better to leave them in to add to soil fertility
