Some sunshine on the Allotment

 In Allotment, Blog, Veg Growing

Last Thursday at the Allotment we saw some sunshine, not the overcast skies that were forecast. We finally managed to move the saskatoon, something which had been on the to-do list for some weeks now since we had dug the hole for it in December. It didn’t have a tap root but it is a well-grown bush with a large root ball.

Moving the saskatoon

We had previously dug down 80cm from the edge of the plant and this helped to consolidate the roots. With some good muscle power the soil was removed all round and under the bush, we dug a channel to its new home which was in the same bed, slid it onto a plastic sheet and slid it over. All closely supervised by the local robin.

With a little tweaking it was at the right depth and we filled it in and watered it. Time then for coffee!

Repairing the raised beds

The repairs to the raised beds continued and were finished today, the dead leaves were cleared from the strawberries and we continued to take back the grass edges.

The warmer weather has brought on the purple sprouting broccoli. Some of the plants haven’t done too well due to the extreme cold in November but we had a good picking to share out.

And the first daffodils are out!

Jobs for next week

  • Weed round the fruit
  • Weed the Welsh onions
  • Continue with the grass edges
  • Weeding the veg beds
  • Put plastic sheet down on a potato bed to warm up the soil

A note about our fruit pruning workshop on the 26th – we are now fully booked.  If we have any cancellations, we will let you know.
